The Fredericksburg Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO) invites the public to an open house on Wednesday evening to learn more about the status of a potential new bridge over the Rappahannock River linking Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg.
FAMPO has contracted with the engineering firm Michael Baker International to conduct a study of five possible options for a new river crossing. Consultants will present an overview of the study, along with relevant traffic and environmental data and cost estimates—and compare them to a “no build” scenario—on Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Virginia Credit Union Stadium.
The goal of a new crossing is to “help offer a more reliable transportation network,” according to a press release from FAMPO, by providing “more north/south routes for local traffic and additional routes for emergency responders, transit, and bicycle/pedestrian users, while reducing everyday reliance of trips accessing the I-95 corridor.”
The consultants will take community feedback during Wednesday’s open house, which will be conducted drop-in style, as well as via a survey that will be available on Tuesday morning.
FAMPO’s policy committee approved a statement of need for a river crossing study in March of 2023, and FAMPO staff prepared a river crossing research report in June of 2023.
The latest study by MBI considers the environmental impacts of the crossing alternatives. FAMPO is working towards National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) certification of the new river crossing bridge and parkway.
