As we used to tell emerging nations, functioning Democracies involve four key features: (i) participation, (ii) transparency, (iii) integrity, and (iv) accountability. We don't have that anywhere, it seems, and certainly not in our Commonwealth's various governmental structures. What is left is personality, raw assertions of power and, of course, corruption. The people are now in the "give up" phase. After that will come chaotic anger.
Nicely done. Would have liked the caption be more to point to maybe bring in more readers. Bigger problem than just school board. What is sad is many of our students don’t have opportunity. The blame starts at the top, City Council for not taking action; school board for taking free meals, meeting in closed sessions, nepotism and scratching administrations back; our judicial system for not stepping in; school administration; teachers who show up for a paycheck; parents for not speaking out.
Those teachers who challenge their students to excel should be compensated more and also should speak out to help fix this problem without fear of reprisal.
There is no valid excuse for Fredericksburg schools to have been in bottom 10% for last 10 years and at times the very bottom when compared to other schools in Virginia.
Keeping the students down for jobs at fast food facilities and Kalahari.
There is not the will or leadership in our City to bring in someone outside to fix the problem.

This post is meant to be positive in support of our young citizens and to scold those for not taking positive action to correct the problems.
In the last few years, political violence and disruption at School Board meetings has become more and more common. Potential candidates have to consider their own safety and their family’s safety. Fredericksburg City hasn’t seen the same level of vitriol as Spotsy and Stafford at Board meetings, but it has to be a consideration.
