The current superintendent is a nice lady, a long time loyal employee but . . . . . . . it is time for her to go. Her sister is a long time school board member and it is time for her to go as well. Mr. Bailey is a good person but he has been there a long time as well, time for him to go. There are many, many others who have been associated with the school system a long, long time. It is time for them to go as well. These are good people and I hope they don't take this comment personally but I agree with the comment made by Scott Venzina, 'Madness is doing the same thing over and over and then scratching your head and wondering why things haven't changed.' A new board and administration will have to be like a new coach taking over a team that had a 1-9 record the past 12 seasons.

Yes, citizens must get involved! VOLUNTEER in classrooms and run for the School Board to support public schools. Community members need to see the positive work our teachers are doing and better understand the needs of our students first hand. Criticism is easy, being involved for improvement requires your time and effort.

Does volunteering several hundred hours and shared research with constructive criticism count? Does speaking out about the good work many of our teachers do and asking council to fund a study to find why our schools are at the bottom in Virginia count? Does challenging our local news editors to investigate and publish a report about what Scott and Rick have reported on FSPS count?

Constructive Options to consider and purported backlash include:

Merge our system w spotsy county? Our local press beats up on a dysfunctional Spotsy school board but data shows they provide better education than FCPS. Egos gets in the way and most of administration would lose their jobs.

Disband elected School Board and either appoint new board or manage w new city department. Hold Council accountable. Same results as merge.

Hire new Superintendent and give them 3 years free rein and hands off but hold them accountable. Those good teachers contributing most might get more pay and those not performing well get fired. There is no will of the Council, the School Board, the Administration, or many of the teachers. This would be political mistake for those who depend on the school bloc vote and those who depend on schools for their income.

There is not the will. Do nothing and our schools will continue to graduate many not qualified for these ‘high tech’ jobs Council has talked about

‘Keeping the students down’
