Longtime Central Rappahannock Library Director Martha Hutzel will retire effective September 30. Hutzel has spent 37 years total in the library system.
The CRRL has undergone many changes under Hutzel’s leadership, including opening the Barbara J. Fried Center in partnership with Germanna Community College and establishing a new branch at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre with support from the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors and the Cafaro Company. This location was recognized by the American Library Association for its innovative design as part of their 2019 Library Design Showcase.
Hutzel also led the establishment of IdeaSpace: Making+Media, which opened in 2020. This innovative space makes technology like audio equipment and 3-D printing accessible to people across the region.
The CRRL system also did away with late fees during Hutzel’s tenure.
The Advance will have more on Hutzel’s departure. For now, however, re-live a special hour when Hutzel visited the New Dominion Podcast earlier this year.

Support Award-winning, Locally Focused Journalism
The FXBG Advance cuts through the talking points to deliver both incisive and informative news about the issues, people, and organizations that daily affect your life. And we do it in a multi-partisan format that has no equal in this region. Over the past month, our reporting was:
First to report on a Spotsylvania School teacher arrested for bringing drugs onto campus.
First to report on new facility fees leveled by MWHC on patient bills.
First to detail controversial traffic numbers submitted by Stafford staff on the Buc-ee’s project
Provided extensive coverage of the cellphone bans that are sweeping local school districts.
And so much more, like Clay Jones, Drew Gallagher, Hank Silverberg, and more.
