PHOTO ESSAY: The Walk for Peace in Fredericksburg
Local photographer Cori Blanch was on hand Friday to record the Buddhist monks as their journey to Washington, D.C., from Ft. Worth, Texas, took them through Fredericksburg.

With the sidewalks lined, the Fredericksburg Police Department escorts the Buddhist monks as they make their way down Sophia Street.

Exchanging flowers with those lining the street made the event more than something to observe, but a personal encounter for those who came to see the walkers.
Buddhism dates from the late 6th century, when its founder — Siddhartha Gautama — achieved enlightenment. That ancient tradition, however, has room for the modern.
In an age of social isolation, the Walk for Peace allowed to people to break their silos to encounter someone of a culture they likely previously had little interaction with.
Though the walk is scheduled to end in Washington, the monks are prepared to go further.
