The Virginia Department of Transportation has been gearing up to deal with issues over the next few days created by Tropical Storm Debby.
V-DOT says it has crews standing by to clear road hazards, and crews have been inspecting drainage facilities to make sure they are clear to handle the extra rain and prevent highway flooding.
The agency is advising motorists to obey all “road closed” signs, especially around high water in low lying areas. The water may be much deeper than it looks. Cars can be caught and carried away in swift running water that’s only six inches deep and cars can begin to float in a foot of water. And you should move over for emergency crews operating on or near highways.
If you drive a high-profile vehicle such as a box truck or SUV you should pay close attention to high-wind advisories posted on area bridges and overpasses.
The public is also being asked to report any flooding or downed trees that might be blocking roads. You can call V-DOT’S 24-hour line 1-800-367-7623 to report either issue.
If you must travel you can check road conditions in real time by checking the 511 Virginia mobile app or visiting.
