Penny Parrish returns this week with three photographs from her collection, and an accompanying poem - “Three Gates.” Writes Penny: “the tone of it reminds me so much of our need for civility.” The reference of gates also reminds us that civility occurs when one person standing inside is willing to open the gate to another, and that person is willing to enter and engage. Thank goodness for Sunday mornings, and the opportunity to ponder both the beauty of Penny’s work, and the challenge before us all.

THREE GATES
If you are tempted to reveal
A tale to you someone has told
About another, make it pass,
Before you speak, three gates of gold.
These narrow gates: First, "Is it true?"
Then, "Is it needful?" In your mind
Give truthful answer. And the next
Is last and narrowest, "Is it kind?"
And if to reach your lips at last
It passes through these gateways three
Then you may tell the tale, nor fear
What the result of speech may be
(Authorship in dispute)
