The Trump administration’s efforts to make Washington, D.C. more attractive and orderly could have been a welcome chapter in the story of our national capital. Anyone who has walked the Mall, navigated Pennsylvania Avenue, or tried to enjoy a museum surrounded by crumbling infrastructure knows the city could use thoughtful care. In principle, a cleaner, more beautiful capital is a goal Americans can embrace across party lines.
But in practice, this effort has been marred by caprice, disregard for process, and a troubling impulse toward personal memorialization. What could have been an admirable civic endeavor has instead become another example of governing by whim, with democratic norms and legal safeguards treated as disposable—and with a casual disregard for telling the public the truth.
The first problem is how this beautification campaign has been carried out. Federal administrations have long worked with the District of Columbia, Congress, and the public when making major changes to the capital’s appearance or use. There are established channels—planning commissions, public comment periods, environmental reviews, and congressional budgeting—to ensure that the capital’s evolution reflects the will and interests of the American people, not just the tastes of a single occupant of the White House.
This administration has largely bypassed those norms. Projects have appeared without meaningful public explanation or engagement. Residents and stakeholders are often informed after the fact, if at all. Proposed changes arrive as faits accomplis rather than ideas subject to deliberation. The capital city is not a private resort, yet the process has looked far more like unilateral redecoration than democratic improvement of shared civic space.
Even at the very heart of that space—the White House itself—basic transparency has been missing. Extensive renovations, upgrades, and aesthetic changes have been presented to the public with shifting stories about who is paying for what. We have heard one thing from podiums, another from budget documents, and sometimes nothing at all. When the people’s house undergoes significant changes, citizens deserve a clear accounting: What is being done? Why is it necessary? How is it funded? Instead, they get half-answers and spin. Beautification without honesty is not public service; it is branding on the public dime.
The financial choices elsewhere in the city are equally troubling. Beautification of Washington, D.C. is a legitimate national priority, and it should be funded openly and honestly. Instead, the administration has repeatedly tapped the National Park Service budget to underwrite D.C. projects, effectively raiding funds meant for maintaining and protecting our national parks. These are not “extra” dollars lying around. They are monies that should be repairing trails at Yosemite, protecting habitats at Yellowstone, or preserving historic battlefields that tell our national story.
What It Says About this Administration’s Priorities
When we divert park funds to cover cosmetic changes in the capital, we make an implicit statement about our priorities: Appearances in Washington matter more than stewardship of the lands and places that define the American experience. The so‑called “Great Big Beautiful Bill”—which could have explicitly included and debated funding for D.C. cleanup and improvement—passed without doing so. Instead of forthright budgeting, we get back‑door transfers and opaque decisions. Beauty financed by neglect is not genuine improvement; it is mismanagement dressed up in fresh paint.
That brings us to the deeper question: Why this particular campaign, in this particular way? It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the beautification of D.C. under President Trump has been driven less by civic-minded concern than by a desire for personal aggrandizement.
The pattern is familiar. We have seen repeated attempts to place the Trump name on public institutions, including renewed pressure to imprint his brand on the Kennedy Center—an institution deliberately named for a president who symbolized public service and the arts, not self-promotion. We have seen proposals for new archways or structures that serve little public demand but would stand as visual markers of this administration. We have seen flirtations with spectacle—racing events in the city, oversized displays along the Mall—that treat Washington as a stage for one man’s show rather than as a seat of government belonging to 330 million citizens.
Even the rhetoric around some museums and cultural institutions suggests that the goal is not simply to refresh or improve but to attack and reshape national memory. When museums are criticized not for genuine failings but for failing to flatter the current president’s narrative, beautification edges into something darker: the use of public space to rewrite history and glorify the present ruler.
Against that backdrop, the recent vandalism of the World War II Memorial is both outrageous and revealing. Spray‑painting a monument to the Americans who defeated tyranny is indefensible and should be condemned without hesitation. Yet we should also be honest about the climate that makes such acts more likely. When lawful avenues for dissent are ignored, when public input is treated as an obstacle rather than a requirement, when citizens watch decisions about their capital made over their heads, frustration grows. The more this administration treats Washington as a personal canvas, the more some individuals will try, in destructive ways, to write their own messages on the city’s walls and monuments.
A healthy democracy periodically updates and improves its capital. Buildings age. Monuments require maintenance. Public spaces should evolve to reflect a living nation. But those changes must emerge from a transparent process rooted in law, tradition, and public input. They should enhance our shared civic story, not elevate one individual’s ego or drive others to desperate acts.
The Responsible Path Forward
There was—and still is—a responsible path forward. Congress could have debated and passed a capital improvement package as part of a broader infrastructure effort, with clear line items for D.C. cleanup and modernization. The administration could have engaged D.C. residents, planners, historians, veterans’ groups, and preservationists in open forums and design reviews. The National Park Service could have been a partner, not a piggy bank, helping ensure that changes in the capital respect both history and landscape.
Instead, we are left with projects whose funding is opaque, whose legal basis is shaky, and whose guiding vision appears more personal than patriotic. That is not how you honor the nation’s capital, and it is certainly not how you respect the citizens whose taxes pay for every shovel of dirt moved on the Mall or every gallon of paint used in the White House.
Those of us who care about Washington’s beauty—and about good governance—should be clear: improving the capital is a worthy goal. But the ends do not justify just any means, and they certainly do not justify the distortion of law, the marginalization of citizens, and the siphoning of funds from our national parks. We can insist on both clean streets and clean processes, on both inspiring vistas and honest budgets.
Washington, D.C. deserves to be more than a backdrop for one man’s ambitions and more than a canvas for frustrated vandals. It should reflect the best of our national character: transparency, accountability, stewardship, and a humility before history. Beautification that violates those principles is not progress. It is mere decoration over deeper cracks in our democratic foundation.
