When I was all of 15 and my dad all of 40, we had a discussion of an elderly great aunt's various medical maladies (she was an ancient to both of us at 72) and I wondered at her capacity to endure so many problems at such an "advanced age". The best we could surmise was that her current misery (and, indeed, she had many health issues for her entire adult life) was better than the Great Unknown. And I think, for most of us, that this is the case.
