After decades of the U.S. treating soccer as an afterthought, the investment we’ve made—from youth leagues to pro academies—is finally paying off on the World Cup stage. The beauty of that success is that it all starts locally: recreation teams, school programs, traveling clubs, and our own University of Mary Washington squads here in the Fredericksburg region. If you want to feel part of the World Cup, go out and watch a local match and cheer like a global title is on the line. And thank you to Drew for a terrific column that captures both the excitement of the tournament and the passion of our local soccer community.
