My husband and I have 2 grandchildren, ages 13 and 11. My husband served in the US Navy in WWII. Tomorrow he is being honored at Freedom M.S. for his service. Pretty good for someone who is 98 years old and is truly one of he greatest generation.

We are looking forward to attending the Spotsylvania County Public Schools Freedom MS Veterans' Day recognition. Freedom MS is on Smith Station Road.

All are welcome to attend the event. The doors open at 8 AM. Bring your license to get your Visitors' Pass into the building. The program includes the Presentation of colors, music, and a student reading their winning essay on 'Gratitude'. A very nice reception follows.

Spotsy Schools does a wonderful job of recognizing veterans. As a 31-year SCPS retiree, I remember that over the decades, a vote would be considered to close the schools on Veterans' Day as a student holiday. Spotsy Co PS said, instead, 'how is our future generation ever going to learn about the sacrifices and service that these Veterans gave to our country?

How will they remember their school experience? We want them to recall that Veterans Day is more than bulletin boards, coloring a flag, and having red, white, and blue streamers in the building. Having the day off from school. It is about People who gave to our country and are still with us. It is about community in a shared experience of recognizing them.

All veterans who attend this morning's assembly at Freedom MS will be asked to stand in recognition of their service to the country. No one is singled out. They all gave.

But what an opportunity for anyone reading these comments to be able to meet WWII veteran DICK TOYE of Spotsy Co. who served in Guadalcanal in the Pacific in WWII in the US Navy. Seaman First Class.

A member of 'The Greatest Generation'.

Mr. Toye's story of his service during WWII was on Sunday's front page of the Free Lance-Star. If you can't drive out to Freedom MS this morning, then please (google) and read it in recognition of why we continue to recognize Veterans' Day in the US:

Service and Sacrifice for Our Country.

But to meet Mr. Toye in person? You'll sure remember that.
