When it was still an indepedent newspaper, the Stars and Stripes reported extensively in 1969 on the My Lai massacre in Vietnam with follow-up articles on the court martials of its perpetrators.

When I was young, in junior high history class, I can remember being told that one of the main reasons Nazi Germany lost the war was because all of the soldiers thought alike; they were trained to assume ‘the’ Nazi soldier’s way of thinking and to fight in one way, while the American soldiers thought independently; they were trained to fight in the best way a situation called for. Accepting there is some truth to that, I think the new exclusive ‘warrior’ culture being permeated through the Dept of ‘War’ can be said to be repeating the Nazi Germany mistake.
