Emergency repairs are now complete on the Falmouth Bridge over the Rappahannock between Fredericksburg and Stafford County.
VDOT says the right lane of U.S. 1 northbound will reopen on Friday, March 14, after being closed for repairs back in November of last year.
A recent bridge inspection found rapid deterioration on the structural steel elements that support the bridge deck in several areas. The repairs cost $1.1 million.
The bridge, which carries about 40,000 vehicles each day, was built in 1943. About 2% of those vehicles are trucks.
Further inspection of the bridge has produced a six-year rehabilitation plan that could cost $86.2 million. This project is scheduled to begin in 2029.
Chatham Repaving
In other road work news, the parking lot at Chatham Manor in the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Memorial Park is being repaved starting March 24. The lot will be closed to all but foot traffic for about two weeks.
And running from April through mid-May, all park road surfaces except Lee Drive will be milled and repaved. That could take about eight weeks. Signs will be posted for those visiting the park.
